What Does a Funeral Cost in the UK? A Clear Guide to What to Expect

British pounds

Nobody wants to think about the cost of a funeral until they have to. Then, often at short notice, there’s a lot to take in: what’s essential, what’s optional, and how it all adds up.

And costs are rising. According to Legal & General, the average UK funeral cost £3,616 in 2014 and £4,706 in 2024, and is projected to reach £6,733 by 2034. The SunLife Cost of Dying Report 2026 found that the cost of a traditional attended funeral rose by 5.3% in 2025, the steepest year-on-year rise since 2016.

That’s why we created our free Aura’s Guide to Funeral Costs, a plain-English guide that breaks down exactly what a funeral tends to cost, what’s unavoidable and what’s optional, and where to turn for support if you need it.

This post is a quick look at what’s inside. The full guide goes into much more detail, with a named source for every figure, so you know exactly where the numbers come from.

There’s no single right place to start, but the guide covers five areas that tend to matter most:
1

Costs you can’t avoid

A couple of fees apply to almost every funeral, and they can catch people out if you don’t know to expect them. We explain what they are, when they apply, and how Aura’s plans cover them as standard.

Costs you can manage

Ceremony costs, flowers and a traditional wake can add a surprising amount to a funeral, but none of them are compulsory. We walk through what each typically costs, and simpler alternatives that can bring the total down.

A lower-cost alternative: direct cremation

More people are choosing direct cremation over a traditional funeral. We explain what it involves, and roughly how much less it tends to cost.

Getting support with funeral costs

If you’re arranging a funeral now and money is tight, there’s support available. We cover who to speak to and where to start.

Planning ahead

Funeral costs are rising, but a funeral plan lets you lock in today’s price, whenever you end up needing it. We explain how plans work and what’s included.

This is just a glimpse of what’s inside our free Guide to Funeral Costs. Like everything we do at Aura, it’s built around the same family-run approach: practical help, at your own pace, without pressure.

You can download your free copy at aura.life. There’s no obligation, and our No Pressure Promise means we’ll give you the space to decide in your own time. If you’d rather talk it through, our team is here on 0800 066 3345.
